IN MEMORIAM

Sarah C. Burke (1936-2006)

On December 9, 2006, Sanctuary for Families lost a dear friend. Sarah Burke was a founding board member of Sanctuary and its second Board Chair and worked tirelessly up until her death for the agency – and the clients – she loved. Under her visionary leadership, Sanctuary became a model agency serving the multiple needs of domestic violence victims and a leading voice advocating for the rights of domestic violence victims and their children everywhere.

In 1992, in recognition of her years of dedication to Sanctuary for Families, the Board of Directors named Sanctuary’s large transitional shelter in the Bronx after her. Sarah Burke House, which houses up to 56 families each night in fully equipped and safe apartments, has set the standard for shelters serving domestic violence victims, just as Sarah Burke herself set the standard for dedication to the cause of domestic violence and to the clients she loved. She will be sorely missed.
