Sanctuary runs several small shelters in the outer boroughs of New York City for domestic violence survivors and their children who no longer have a safe place to stay free from violence. Housing up to 43 women and children in 14 apartments each night, these shelters are named for influential women throughout history: Harriet Tubman, Frida Kahlo, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Rosa Parks. Residents receive clinical, legal, and advocacy services offered on-site in the shelters and at Sanctuary’s Manhattan, Bronx, and Brooklyn offices. Residents may also utilize the Continuing Care Program, which assists women with the transition to independent living for up to one year after they leave shelter.
