New York, NY – Sanctuary for Families applauds Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown and Assistant District Attorney Scott Kessler for their tenacious and skillful prosecution of State Senator Hiram Monserrate for the assault of his companion.  We who work with domestic violence victims know full well that many victims, despite serious injuries, refuse to testify against their abusers – due to fear, misplaced loyalty, or the vain hope that he will change. When law enforcement authorities pursue such cases despite the obstacles and treat them as the crimes they truly are, it sets a standard for future cases and strengthens our efforts to end domestic abuse.  We commend the Queens District Attorney’s Office for taking a strong stand.  We believe that justice has been served by their efforts.
