School-Age Children's Program

The School-Age Children’s Program consists of a number of different projects.

After-School Program:

The After-School Program is the core initiative of Sarah Burke House’s School-Aged Children’s Program. It offers a safe and supportive educational and recreational setting. The experienced children’s staff provides one-on-one and group homework help, arts and crafts activities, science experiments, access to computers, and free play. Children are divided into two separate programs – grades K-4 and grades 5-8.

Students in grades K-4 receive academic support as well as extracurricular fun. The part-time program for grades 5-8 includes homework assistance, and monthly projects that the children work on together. Over the year, volunteer tutors provide one-on-one tutoring sessions. This allows children who are struggling in school to receive the individualized attention they need to thrive.

The After-School Program frequently takes field trips to museums, parks, and special events. These experiences with the larger community and their families help children relax and let down some of their defenses, giving counselors a chance to help them accomplish their academic and social goals.

Summer Day Camp:

During the summer, SBH’s Summer Day Camp provides child residents with a safe and supportive atmosphere to deal with their experiences, while improving their communication and self-expression.

SBH provides on-site day camp activities, including arts and crafts, literacy skill-building activities, sports clinics, and free play designed to improve cognitive and motor skills. In addition, participants also go on a number of field trips, including to Randall’s Island, the Museum of Natural History/Hayden Planetarium, Yankees games, and the Bronx Zoo.

Saturday Academy:

The Saturday Academy Program provides mothers a few hours to themselves and children with an enriching, engaging, and safe place to be. Throughout the year children have the opportunity to explore a variety of activities and subject areas while they are on fun and engaging field trips. Past trips have included visits the FDNY Fire Zone, the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, and performances at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center.
